Welcome to the Cotter Guitar Company’s School of Lutherie. We offer 4 unique, hands-on, career-oriented training programs in the field of guitar repair and restoration. Our program focuses on the real world of guitar repair and how to earn a living in this specialized field. We custom tailor each students program to his or her individual needs so as to provide a positive and productive learning experience; and the real world skills needed to work professionally as a guitar repair and restoration expert.
Our mission is simple. Although there are many good educational materials available in print, on video, and on the internet; as well as some very good lutherie schools, we feel that there is a common factor missing in much of what is available. There is simply not much training or educational material available that prepare the student to earn a full-time living in the business, leading to many otherwise well-meaning repair people that lack some of the critical skills to be successful if the field. Many aspiring luthiers cut a potentially lucrative career short, only because they have had limited training in the actual business aspect of luthierie. This is where Cotter Guitars bridges the gap. Along with top-notch training in the actual work of repairing and restoring guitars, there is much training and preparation to actually work in the field.
During your time with us, you will work in a very busy, full-service guitar shop. The student will be exposed to virtually every typical repair and restoration scenario. This includes learning to do the work, greeting and talking to the client, diagnosing problems, selling the jobs, learning valuable bookkeeping and business skills, and much, much more. Truly a complete learning experience that actually prepares the student for a career in the field.
We are located in the heart of Charlotte, NC. Charlotte is a growing city with much to offer. The weather is nice, and the music scene is up and coming, and growing along with the city. We typically have over 100 instruments in for repair at any given time. The region is full of guitar players, many of which are our long time clients.

COURSES OF STUDY
2 WEEK GUITAR REPAIR TECHNICIAN TRAINING COURSE: LEARN THE BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY TO PERFORM BASIC GUITAR REPAIRS IN A GUITAR TECH OR MUSIC STORE SETTING (GREAT FOR GUITAR SALESMEN, IN HOUSE MUSIC STORE MINOR REPAIRS, OR TECHNICIANS FOR BANDS, ETC.)
COURSE OBJECTIVE: Students will learn to properly set up, maintain, and perform basic repairs and adjustments on all guitars. Topics covered will be: assessment and diagnosis, set up work, guitar electronics repairs and minor electronic modifications, minor repairs I.E: replacing tuning machines, replacing hardware, tremolo system repair and maintenance, installing pickups, strap locks and buttons, nut and saddle adjustments, and introduction to fret work. Also covered will be an introduction to the basic set of tools needed to perform these services.
TUITION: $ 1,500 for course, required tech data sheets, textbook and troubleshooting field guide.
$ 1,950 for course, requires tech data sheets, textbook and troubleshooting field guide + basic set of necessary tech tools.
10 WEEK GUITAR REPAIR JOURNEYMAN TRAINING COURSE: CAREER ORIENTED TRAINING COURSE TEACHING THE STUDENT THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO WORK PROFESSIONALLY IN THE FIELD OF GUITAR REPAIR .
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will learn the skills necessary to work professionally in the field of guitar repair. This course includes everything offered in the 2 week program in addition to: Fret work, assessment and diagnosis 2 (learning to assess diagnose and quote on all repair work, including major repairs), Structural repairs, and finish work. Also included will be “The business of luthierie pt. 1” which focuses on finding work, building a reputation and general information pertaining to doing business in the field of luthierie. Students will be introduced to the tools necessary to work as a guitar repair professional. Students will also build an electric guitar while attending the course.
TUITION: $6,750 for course, necessary text materials including troubleshooting field guide + basic set of professional guitar repair tools. Includes housing.
16 WEEK PROFESSIONAL LUTHIER TRAINING COURSE: STUDENTS OF THIS COURSE WILL LEARN TO WORK PROFESSIONALLY IN THE FIELD OF LUTHIERIE. THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO PURSUE LUTHIERIE AS A FULL TIME OCCUPATION, INCLUDING GUITAR REPAIR, BUILDING, AND RESTORATION.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will go through the 10 week journeyman course. In addition, students will learn “The business of luthierie pt. 2” which includes a complete training in every aspect of the business. This includes the basics of operating a stand alone guitar shop. Students will also complete an acoustic guitar in addition to the electric from the journeyman course. Students will also complete a 2 week internship in our full service guitar shop, working in the “real world” of luthierie.
